Family Sponsorship
A Canadian Citizen, a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a Permanent Resident of Canada can sponsor some of their relatives to immigrate to Canada as Permanent Residents if he or she is at least 18 years old.
As a Permanent Resident of Canada, you can live, study, and work in Canada. You can also enjoy most benefits enjoyed by a Canadian citizen.
In order to be able to sponsor a family member, a Canadian citizen, or a Permanent Resident must be able to show that he or she has the financial capacity to support the family member in Canada. If eligible, a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada can sponsor:
- Their spouse, partner, or dependent child
- Their parents and grandparents
- Their relatives
- An adopted child
Who can be a sponsor
- The sponsor must be 18 years or older.
- Must be a Canadian citizen, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a Permanent Resident living in Canada.
- Must show proof of not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability
- Must prove that they have the financial capacity to support their family member.
Sponsor’s Obligation
- The sponsor must make a formal commitment to become financially responsible for the family member. This undertaking is a binding contract between the sponsor and the minister of immigration.
- A spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner must be supported financially for three years after they are granted permanent residency.
- A dependent child has to be supported financially for ten years or until the child becomes 25, whichever comes first.
